How We Behave

At Joseph Hood, we pride ourselves on the excellent behaviour of our pupils both in and out of school. We are often complimented on our pupils’ behaviour by visitors, parents and people we meet on educational visits and school trips.

We work hard to make Joseph Hood Primary School a safe and caring environment where everyone feels happy and valued and as such, we have high expectations of behaviour from all our pupils. Not only do we regularly review our Behaviour and Relationships policy and our Anti‐Bullying policy (in consultation with the School Changemakers), but at the beginning of each school year, children are consulted regarding the classroom rules which are then displayed in each classroom.

We are a 'Positive Noticing' School. We talk to our children and use a restorative approach to dealing with behaviour.  Every class uses the same rewards chart to reward good learning behaviour.  We also use Zones Of Regulation which help children to regulate their emotions.

Our Behaviour Ethos:
"Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe"

Our behaviour expectations are built around three core principles:

  1. Be Ready – We prepare for learning and take responsibility for our actions.

  2. Be Respectful – We treat others with kindness and value our school community.

  3. Be Safe – We make choices that ensure our own and others’ safety.

These principles guide all behaviour expectations and are embedded in our school culture. This underpins everything we do and sets high expectations for behaviour which can be seen, felt and heard across the school. In all of this, a strong emphasis is placed on fostering positive relationships between staff and pupils and on the co-operation and support of parents.

In Early years, behaviour is modelled and the children are able to earn certificates at the end of the week.

Key Stage 1 can earn 'Class Dojo points'. This is a system where good learning behaviours are rewarded; working towards a whole class treat at the end of the week.

Key Stage 2 pupils can earn 'House Points'. There are 4 houses: Picadilly, District, Central and Circle. The children are given tokens that they can put into their house tube. These are counted up at the end of each term. The house with the most house points over the year wins the House Cup.

In addition, children are able to earn “golden tickets” which they post in the gold box in the school hall. We pick two golden tickets from the box each week and the winners have a special treat at the end of the term.
