Maths at Joseph Hood

Our Vision

Our aim at Joseph Hood is for all children to enjoy mathematics and have a secure and deep understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and procedures when they leave us to go to secondary school and into the wider world. We believe that mathematics is a tool for everyday life that is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems. It also provides the materials and means for creating new imaginative worlds to explore. As teachers, we have a crucial role in supporting children’s early Mathematical development and preparing them to be effective mathematicians.

The Mastery Approach

Joseph Hood Primary School adopted a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics in 2019. The rationale behind adopting our approach to teaching mathematics lay within the NCETM Maths Hub Programme as well as the 2014 National Curriculum, which states:

  • The expectation is that most pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace.

  • Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content.

  • Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are the three key aims of the National Curriculum which should be addressed in each sequence of learning.

White Rose Education

At Joseph Hood, we support our planning with the White Rose Maths curriculum to give children a clear, consistent journey through maths. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build strong number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning. Using small, manageable steps, pupils develop confidence and a deep understanding that prepares them for future learning.

Resources to support learning

Times Tables Rock Stars

At Joseph Hood, we are proud to use Times Tables Rock Stars to help our pupils build speed, accuracy, and confidence with their multiplication facts. The programme makes learning times tables fun and engaging through interactive games, friendly competitions, and personalised challenges.

Busy Things

We use Busy Things to make learning fun and interactive across the curriculum. Packed with colourful games, quizzes, and creative activities, it helps children practise key skills in maths, English, science and more. The engaging, playful design encourages curiosity and confidence, making learning feel like play.

Maths At Home

Maths at Home provides clear, practical support for pupils and families. With easy-to-follow videos and explanations, it helps children practise key skills and build confidence outside the classroom. It’s a great way for parents to understand methods used in school and support their child’s learning at home.
