SEND
Supporting Pupils with SEND at Joseph Hood Primary School
At Joseph Hood Primary School, inclusion is not an initiative — it is a culture. Everything we do is built on the belief that every child belongs, every child can thrive, and every child can achieve. Our provision ensures that pupils with SEND experience the same rich curriculum, opportunities and aspirations as their peers, supported with the right adaptations to help them flourish.
We adapt learning carefully so every child can access the same curriculum as their classmates. This might include visuals, now-and-next boards, chunked instructions, writing frames or quiet spaces when needed. Adults move around the classroom to support all children, helping pupils with SEND develop confidence and independence.
At Joseph Hood we work closely with a range of specialists — such as our Educational Psychologist, SEMH consultant, Speech & Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist — to make sure children receive the right support at the right time. Our calm, “non-shouting” ethos helps pupils feel safe and understood, and staff use consistent approaches to behaviour and wellbeing.
We build strong relationships with families from day one. Home visits, stay-and-play sessions and coffee mornings help us get to know you and your child well before they start school. We are always available to talk and work in partnership with you.
Our Strengths
Belonging and inclusion
All children take part in school life — clubs, trips, events and residentials. We plan ahead with providers to make sure every child can access these experiences.
High-quality teaching
Teachers adapt lessons so pupils can learn alongside their peers. Our training programmes, including Write Away Together, help staff support writing, vocabulary and independent learning.
Strong teamwork and professional support
We work closely with specialist services and value their expertise. Staff share a deep understanding of our pupils and take collective responsibility for their wellbeing.
A rich, accessible curriculum
Our curriculum is language-rich and carefully sequenced. Vocabulary is pre-taught and reinforced and learning is broken down clearly to help children make strong progress.
Partnership with families
At Joseph Hood, we intentionally build relationships with families from the moment we first meet them. Whether through home visits, coffee mornings, pre-visit meetings for trips, or personalised communication at the gate, families are partners in their children’s journey.
