Music Development Plan
At Joseph Hood Primary School, music is a central component of the curriculum, fostering creativity, expression, and skill development among all students from Nursery to Year 6. The school places great emphasis on an inclusive and comprehensive music program, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to high-quality music education. The curriculum is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching, hands-on instrumental learning, and external partnerships with Merton Music Foundation (MMF) and Rocksteady.
Weekly lessons are supported by the Charanga music scheme, and children engage in a variety of musical experiences, including music club, instrumental performances with Rocksteady and guitars and community events.
Every year, all pupils in Year 4 are given the unique opportunity to learn the guitar with an experienced and highly skilled peripatetic music teacher. They also have options for individual music lessons and scholarships to further their development. The school actively supports music education for disadvantaged and special educational needs students, offering reduced rates, sponsored places and ensuring participation in key musical activities.
Music at Joseph Hood is not only about learning instruments but also about building confidence, community involvement, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Read more about our commitment to the development of music in our school below.
