Physical Education
Our Vision for PE
At Joseph Hood, we believe that Physical Education is for everyone. Our curriculum is built to ensure all children are physically confident, resilient, and motivated to lead healthy, active lives. Through two hours of high-quality PE each week — from EYFS to Year 6 — pupils explore a broad range of activities including gymnastics, dance, tag rugby, swimming, and athletics.
We aim to develop not only physical competence, but also the communication, cooperation, and perseverance skills that prepare children for success beyond the sports field. PE at Joseph Hood fosters a lifelong love of movement, teamwork, and wellbeing.
How we INSPIRE in PE
Inclusive
PE at Joseph Hood is designed so that every child can participate and achieve. Lessons are adapted to meet diverse needs, ensuring all pupils – regardless of ability, background or experience – can enjoy physical activity and develop confidence.
Nurturing
Our PE curriculum nurtures pupils’ physical, social and emotional growth. Children are supported to try new activities, develop resilience, and grow in self-belief as they progress from fundamental movement skills to complex games and competitions.
Success
We celebrate pupils’ successes, big and small – from mastering a new skill to representing the school at competitions. Step by step, children build the competence and confidence to apply their learning in different sports and contexts, preparing them for active, healthy futures.
Perseverance
Physical Education encourages children to keep going, even when learning is challenging. Whether practising a new technique, building stamina, or working as part of a team, pupils learn to value effort and persistence as much as winning.
Imagination
PE sparks imagination through creative movement, problem-solving and strategy. From choreographing dance routines to devising game tactics, pupils are encouraged to think creatively and work collaboratively.
Respect
Sport provides opportunities to develop respect – for teammates, opponents, referees and rules. PE teaches fairness, good sportsmanship and the importance of respecting differences in ability, experience and background.
Encourage
We encourage pupils to lead healthy, active lives beyond school. Children are inspired to join clubs, take part in extra-curricular activities, and share what they have learnt with their families and community, seeing themselves as lifelong participants in sport and physical activity.
Impact
At Joseph Hood Primary, the impact of our PE curriculum is clear: because provision begins in EYFS, children develop secure fundamental movement skills early and are well-prepared for the demands of KS1 and KS2 PE. By Year 6, pupils are confident, physically literate, and able to apply their skills across a wide range of sports and activities.
Over 92% of pupils across the school are working at or above age-related expectations in PE, with more than 1 in 10 performing at a greater depth level.
Engagement is high, with strong participation in school competitions and local events. Our successes, including winning the West Wimbledon REFSPECT trophy and achieving Gold at the Netball Borough Championships in 2022/23, demonstrate our commitment to excellence in sport and inspire pupils to strive to be the best they can.
Pupil voice shows that children enjoy PE and understand its importance for health and wellbeing. As a result, they are more active at playtimes, show improved teamwork and resilience in class, and leave Joseph Hood Primary with a positive attitude towards lifelong physical activity.
