PE and Sports Funding

Background

All state-maintained schools, academies, middle schools, special schools and pupil referral units which have primary aged pupils (as reported in the 2013 school census) receive Sports Premium funding. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision for PE and sport in schools. We will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils progress and participation in PE and school sport. We are required to publish on-line information about how we have used the additional funding, including details about our sporting provision alongside curriculum details. This will ensure that parents/carers and others are made fully aware of the PE and sporting provision at Joseph Hood.

How will we be spending the Sports Premium funding

Our rationale for the use of Sports Premium funding is that it must be used so that:
  • All children benefit regardless of sporting ability
  • The most able children are given the opportunity to compete in tournaments with other schools
  • Staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development
  •  Some activities may be subsidised so that pupils do not miss out due to financial constraints eg swimming
  • We make use of collaborative and partnership working

With the above rationale in mind, and following the guidelines for how to spend this money, use of this year’s Sports Premium funding has included:

  • Continued membership of the Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP)
  • Investment in the professional development of staff at our school so they are best equipped to teach high quality Physical Education and school sport for years to come.
  • Providing supply cover to release the PE Coordinator for subject development  time
  • Continuing to take part in local sports competitions/events organised by MSSP during the year 2016/2017.
  • Provision of specialist coaching in a range of sports during class time and for after school clubs
  • Provision of swimming sessions for a whole year
  • Providing subsidised places in after school clubs
  • Providing new resource to support the children's access and learning of physical education
  • Uniform for our teams who enter borough competitions

Impact

We will evaluate the impact of the Sports Premium funding as part of our self-evaluation and provision mapping arrangements. We will look at how well we use our Sport Premium to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of. Updates relating to our provision for PE and sport will be provided throughout the school year through the school website and newsletters.

Particular achievements have included:

Achieved Gold Merton Sports Mark for the first time
All pupils receiving 2 hours of quality PE per week
Offering a wider range of extra-curricular clubs run by specialist coaches and staff
Maintained the number of entries into Merton intra-school events with some teams achieving best-ever results thanks to specialist coaching provided through the funding
Changes to our swimming programme have resulted in more children being able to swim to the required level
Improving staff and pupil confidence in delivering and taking part in physical education
More borough competitions being entered
