Our Library

Our school library is a bright and inspiring place where the children enjoy browsing, reading and borrowing from a wide collection of books. Here is a bright and cosy space where we take our shoes off, pad around and just enjoy books. The walls are hand painted with images of the BFG, Winnie the Pooh and other loved characters from children’s literature.

We have an enthusiastic librarian team including both key stage 2 students and parents who volunteer to look after the stock, re-shelve books and help with enquiries. All of our volunteers are very proud to show off the library and are able to help children find a book to suit their interest. Children throughout our school enjoy our extensive collection of picture books and stories whilst a growing range of chapter-book fiction awaits our independent readers. In our fiction sections we hold both classic stories that never age and plenty of the latest and best literature written for children. We are always open to requests for titles that we should stock.

Beyond stories we have lots of books to help our children to discover more about the world we live in. From a fascinating book about what goes on when you flush the toilet through to a biography of Justin Bieber, we offer books that aim to excite and engage our children. Thanks to the initiative and commitment of one of our parents, we received a significant grant from the Foyle Foundation in 2014 which enabled us to invest in a wide range of modern, exciting books and a child-friendly online librarian system.

From reception upwards, all children at Joseph Hood visit the library on a two-week cycle with their class which gives them a chance to borrow a book to take home. Open library sessions at lunchtime and after school enable children to change their books more regularly to match their own reading appetites. Lunchtime story time sessions are popular.

We look forward to welcoming you in the library!
